The
Atlanta Rhythm Section took the stage on Saturday September 28,
2002 to a packed crowd at Virginia Beach's Neptune Festival. What
had been a fair sized gathering in the late afternoon expanded
by showtime into a crowd of probably a thousand people - completely
filling the venue area with people
watching from multiple levels of the parking garage at the far
end of the enclosed park area. A fireworks display over the ocean
preceded the event and was a perfect prelude to a totally energy
packed show.
Demonstrating
the professional nature of the ARS organization, individual band
members conquered some difficult challenges to give the audience
a powerful and memorable show. Due to the popularity of the event,
roads around the show were packed in every direction - making
it difficult for a couple of band members to get to the stage.
Also, while no one in the audience could tell, singer Andy Anderson
was feeling under the weather. But when ARS took the stage and
the lights went on, none of that mattered - they were a tight,
solid classic rock band ready to put on a show.
The
band opened with Back Up Against the Wall - setting a strong
up-tempo pace. Next up was the classic Champagne Jam, which
led into a knockout version of Homesick. Then came Doraville,
the first hit and still sounding fine. The pace slowed through
renditions of I'm Not the Only One and Conversation
- then things really started to kick into gear. A rocking Large
Time was followed by I'm Not Gonna Let It Bother Me Tonight,
So Into You and Jukin. As the hour grew later a
stiff breeze continued to blow off the ocean. The crowd stayed
into it - enjoying the show and jamming the area in front of the
stage. With The Ballad of Lois Malone, there seemed to
be a further increase in the bobbing and swaying of the crowd
with the music. ARS headed into the home stretch with great versions
of Spooky and Imaginary Lover, and closed with the
flat out rocker Outside Woman Blues. The crowd wanted one
more - so the band left them with a lovely Georgia Rhythm.
Based
on the enthusiasm and energy displayed by the crowd throughout
the show, it was clearly a Large Time for all.
